We are incredibly sad to announce that, after six years, our book subscriptions are stopping.

What started as a community of lovers of women-led literature in 2018 has evolved in ways we never imagined possible.

Our community, our events, our book club, and partnerships will continue, but unfortunately our book subscription is no longer feasible. November will be our last subscription.



The difficult decision to close our subscriptions, the core of our business, has not been taken lightly. It has been the result of many difficult conversations and months of planning. We’re so grateful for the support that has kept them going for six years, but it’s time to focus on new opportunities that best serve our amazing community.

We’ve shared some snippets of the struggles we’ve faced behind-the-scenes, including losing money and stock to previous fulfilment centres, and having seen the closure or evolution of industry faves and fellow small businesses, we know we have to make a change in order to survive.

Our mission has always been to curate unique reading experiences to champion underrepresented writers, diversifying bookshelves and disrupting the publishing industry. Amidst rising costs and unfavourable trading conditions we are unable to maintain an affordable subscription for our community, and we will now commit to creating new low-cost and free opportunities to meet our mission.


We’re sorry.

We know things haven’t been good enough. Like everyone, we have been hugely impacted by the cost-of-living crisis. We’ve been let down by multiple fulfilment partners. Our small team has faced personal challenges which has limited capacity to work.

This has all negatively affected our community, and we are sincerely sorry for the poor service over recent months. You deserve better. We are committed to providing appropriate compensation, and we hope you’ll stay with us as we begin a new chapter in Aphra’s story.



If you’re on a rolling subscription you don’t need to do anything. Your November payment was taken at the start of October, and you won’t be charged in future.

For customers with prepaid subscriptions and outstanding orders, we’re offering compensation:

  • If you’re on a prepaid subscription (i.e. our 3, 6, and 12 month subscriptions) you can request a refund or store credit for your outstanding balance. Store credit can be used in our Bristol bookshop, or in our upcoming online bookshop.
  • If you have a gift subscription that hasn’t been redeemed you can request a refund or store credit for the full balance.
  • If you have a missing order you can request a refund, store credit, or a Mystery Book Bundle to the value or exceeding the value of your order.

The Next Chapter

This is not the end of Aphra’s story. We’re so proud of this community, and we’ll continue to connect book lovers and champion underrepresented authors. Our book club will continue in the form of free online and IRL events, based on book picks we’ll reveal online. Subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on social media to stay updated. We hope you’ll keep reading with us.

Give me the TLDR

Our book subscriptions are ending. November will be our last book subscription. If you’re on a rolling subscription, you don’t need to do anything. You won’t be charged going forward.

If you’re on a prepaid subscription, have an unredeemed gift subscription, or are missing an order, you can click here to request compensation.

When will I receive my compensation?

We’re a small team and we anticipate a lot of compensation requests, and so we kindly ask for your patience. All compensation requests will be processed within 30 days.

What about the book club app/events?

They’re not going anywhere! We’re unable to fulfil the subscriptions, but we love chatting all things books with our community. In the coming weeks we will open our online book club on Geneva to everyone free-of-charge, and our IRL events will remain open to everyone. Every month we will pick a book to discuss and share it across our socials. You’ll have the option to support us by purchasing the book through our storefront, or you can get the book another way (we recommend your local library!). We’ll host online and IRL chats to discuss the book throughout the month.
